Banishers send the energy of nuclear explosions away through short lived FTL fields. This usually means satellites bouncing armies from one part of a planet to another.į: Near Eclipse Phase levels of nanomachinesĮdit 2: I'm going to briefly pontificate about banisher warfare. This is easier to do over a short distance than a longer one, indeed as of Libertarian Space Nomad Quest even most advanced powers can only bounce things over a short distance. You come out at the velocity you went in. Drive is instantaneous but drive charging takes a while, especially on older vessels. There's lots of these scattered throughout the system. That doesn't mean that small microsats hunter killers or Q-ships aren't a thing.Į: FTL is between set zones which lead to other set destinations. There's stealth in space, just no invisibility in space.

Actual matter negates some of this, and only very high energy ones can really cause a reactor shutdown.Ĭ: There's at least some kind of honest to Doc Smith force screens at high technological levels.ĭ: I disagree with Atomic rockets about stealth in space. Higher tech ones can get rid of smaller explosions, and really high tech/high energy ones can suck the energy out of a target. They are entirely automated, and have the ability to perform (and the large ones sustain) high (multi-G) acceleration.Ī: No artificial gravity, no acceleration dampersī: Banishers can get rid of any explosion over several hundred tons of TNT at the base. The latter run Hunter Killers, which are unmanned craft varying from what are effectively missiles to 300,000 ton space battleships. High acceleration (multi-G sprint) craft and launch window independent craft both exist, but would be Concords and military craft rather than every day civilian vehicles.īroadly RM manned space craft are Dhows (Freedmanite and other Colonial craft designed for very long endurance and mission time, displacing around 30,000-50,000 tons loaded) Service Craft (shorter endurance planetary designed cargo craft varying from 1000 to 100,000 tons) and military command ships (in the same range of weight but with tons of defensive systems, communications and whatever) More modern craft built by sedentary planetary powers would have mission times of around 3 months or so without additional stuff put on (though they might top off reaction mass or whatever in the mean time). In general they're pretty self sufficient (they're designed for space nomads and people using slow first generation FTL engines.). (Hey isn't your RM setting mostly Atomic Rockets compatible? Want to give us some broad parameters on some RM ships, like the Hawk, and see where we can go with it?)ġ: Dhows would have a relatively low acceleration but unrefueled ranges across solar systems. Any particular preferences or parameters you folks are interested in? Or going with the old standby of space battlecruisers and seeing what we come up with. There are a couple of interesting projects that might be worth looking into - like figuring out a Mars Colony setting (transports, life support, timelines, that sort of thing), or coming up with earth orbit-centric transhuman SPACE RANGERS and thier spacecraft.

Maybe I'll go more into the spirit in which Atomic Rockets was intended and I think is best used later, but for now I think it might be better to focus on the practical uses of Atomic Rockets for worldbuilding and spaceship design. Click to shrink. If you're reading Atomic Rockets, and the thing you take away from it is stopping you from recreating Star Wars, you have Officially Missed The Point of both Star Wars and Atomic Rockets.
